Most of us would agree going to the hospital can be a scary event. A new report on hospital surgery ratings will give us even more reason to be afraid.
Consumer Reports has rated U.S. hospitals on how patients hold up during and after surgery. This is the first time the popular consumer magazine has tackled this
monumental task.
What they found was up to 30% of hospital patients suffer all kinds of complications from surgery like infections, heart attacks and stroke. While hospitals are required to report incidents to some government agencies and submit data to national registries, vital safety information remains off limits to most consumers.
The hospital surgery report also found that mortality and length of stay correlates with complications. Other interesting discoveries included:
- Big name hospitals don’t always live up to their reputation
- Urban and rural hospitals can excel
- Teaching hospitals often fall short
- Specialty hospitals on average do better than others
The surgery ratings give patients more information so they can make informed choices about which hospitals would be best for surgical procedures. While some improvements have been made including hospitals developing electronic record keeping to better track data, more reform is needed.
