The Journal of Clinical Oncology recently reported on the case of a woman diagnosed with advanced incurable lung cancer. An oncologist in Colorado made this diagnosis but felt this woman’s case needed a second opinion, according to the study author Ross Camidge, MD, PhD, director of thoracic oncology clinical program at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.
The 62-year old woman was a former smoker and visited her doctor with a cough, fatigue and weight loss. Her scan revealed a large mass in her right lung with multiple smaller nodules and infiltrates throughout both lungs. That’s why it looked like advanced stage metastatic lung cancer.
When another oncologist on staff at the university was asked to take a look at the scan changes were noticed in the patient’s blood tests. It was then determined there was toxicity from an antibiotic the patient was taking that created widespread lung abnormalities. Once the antibiotic was stopped, new tests revealed the patient did not have incurable cancer, but rather, early stage curable cancer.
