A Sense of Purpose May Increase Lifespan

We’ve heard that a healthy lifestyle, eating nuts and increasing fiber can help us live longer. Even marriage is supposed to increase lifespan.

Now a new study says having a “purpose in life” could also have an effect on how long we live.  Patrick Hill of Carleton University in Canada and Nicholas Turiano of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York combined research to publish these findings in the journal of Psychological Science.

The duo analyzed data from the Midlife in the United State Study that included more than 6,000 people. Subjects were followed for an average of 14 years.

Overall, individuals who reported having a greater purpose in life had a lower mortality risk. And that was the case across all age groups.
