CDC Reports Obamacare’s Prevention Emphasis Will Result in Wider Health Benefits

The Centers for Disease Control has released a report about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. While President Obama’s main goal was to bring the security of health insurance to millions of people, the CDC says Obamacare has the potential to improve population health over the long term.

The report which was published in The Lancelet says Obamacare’s emphasis on prevention could reverse the historic division between public health and private health care services. Andrew Rain, one of the authors of the study, says “The new law represents a historic opportunity for prevention and public health by establishing the first national prevention strategy, adding substantial new funding for prevention and public health programs, and promoting the use of proven clinical preventive services by removing barriers.”

The CDC report suggest that structural and financing reforms introduced by Obamacare have helped move America’s “sick care system largely focused on treatment of illness” to one that is focused on prevention, early detection and health promotion.

By the way, the report says by 2016, the number of people in the United States without health insurance is expected to fall by 25 million.
