Less Doctor Office Visits as Telemedicine Goes Mainstream

Thanks to technology in the near future, patients will spend less time in waiting rooms choosing rather to see their doctor by video visit. That’s the word from the American Telemedicine Association which estimates half of all hospitals in the United States use some form of telemedicine.

This interaction between doctors and patients is expected to go mainstream using Skype and other video systems becoming the next generation of house calls. In the past, doctors were reimbursed based on payments for each patient visit.

Now there’s a new reimbursement structure resulting from the Affordable Care Act uses ACOs or Accountable Care Organizations which are supposed to be more efficient,
cost effective and outcome based. As a result of the ACOs, new networks will be
developed between hospitals, doctors and other medical entities. Even insurance
companies are supporting these efforts.

Top health facilities like the Mayo Clinic are testing video visits to see if they are practical and beneficial enough to expand them. Experts say technology is so advanced now that these video visits are valuable healthcare solutions providing specialized care for patients.
